Lightning McQueen Bulletin Board

I just shipped off this super fun Lightning McQueen bulletin board to one of my former Pre-K students!
When his mom asked me to paint something for his room, of course I was going to make something for him to display all of his school work!!!
Once a teacher, always a teacher...
It was definitely hard to find a box this size, so I had to improvise by tearing a box apart and piecing it back together around the bulletin board.  Sorry, you aren't REALLY receiving a 20" flat screen TV.
My little helper carrying the package into the post office... my arms were full of more orders to ship out.
He wasn't too thrilled that I was taking the time out to take a picture while he was doing all of the heavy lifting.

Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler

On a whim, I decided to paint some crawfish.  Why?  I'm not really sure, perhaps I would like to eat some soon. I think they came out so cute and I am super excited to share this Louisiana-inspired crawfish bulletin board!!!  I put this up for sale on Facebook and it sold within 15 minutes!  Gotta love the internet!

Fleur de Teach

Teachers of the world:
We appreciate all you do for our kids!
Thank you for your hard work!
~ Parents of Young Scholars

Crista painted this for her grad school mentor teacher.
James worked really hard on his gifts, inspired by Handprint and Footprint Art, for his teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week.  We painted his hand and the lower part of his arm brown to make the tree trunk and branches.  He then used his finger tips to create the green leaves.  After everything dried he then made apples using two index finger prints right next to each other.  I painted stems and leaves on the apples.  James' teacher was so appreciative of his thoughtful gift!

I got these cute little marigold flower pots from the Target $1 bins.  We made the apples with fingerprints again and I painted the stems and leaves.

Whatever My Little Heart Desires

There are times when I have been asked by customers to paint something for them to give away as gifts.  Many times people sneak pictures of the nursery or find out the name of the bedding to give me something to work with, but sometimes people just want me to paint whatever my little heart desires.  Sure, I may get some hints as to colors to work with or what NOT to paint or to just paint something "girlie and swirly."

I feel two different things when I get these types of requests:
1.  I get SUPER EXCITED because I can sometimes paint something that I have been wanting to paint but haven't gotten the opportunity.  Many times "my little heart" desires this type of freedom in my painting.
2.  I get really nervous because I often don't know a thing about the person I am creating art for... if I paint polka dots, what if that is the one thing that they absolutely cannot stand?

Then there's the times where I actually can't think of what to paint!  It is sometimes way easier for me to have some "kidspiration" to work off of, however, in the end, sometimes painting whatever my little heart desires can turn out to be my favorite pieces of art.  If I'm ever stuck, though, I just Google some ideas and eventually something will pop up that inspires me :-)

Whatever my little heart desired:
My friend Katie asked me to paint these for her friend's baby-in-the-belly, Celie.  We talked a little bit about colors and then she told me to "have fun with it!"  I had been dying to paint cupcakes, so I went with it...
Then months later, Celie's mom asked me to paint coordinating letters for Celie's big sister, Elle!  I was so excited to hear how much she liked Celie's letters because they are some of my favorites!  My only rule about Elle's letters was that they couldn't be the exact same... and so, the lollipops were born!

The only hints for this bulletin board were "pinks and browns" which was great because I really wanted to try to paint birds for the first time.  I also hadn't done many whirly swirlys, so BINGO!

Allison is mommy to daughter Kennedy and son Jackson and wanted to create a message center in her kitchen.  I custom cut these cork boards to fit her slender space so she could hang these one on top of the other.

I wrote a post about the free fence panels I retrieved from around my neighborhood after Hurricane Gustav swept through Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  A few months later, my husband and I renovated our courtyard and I decided to add some art to the space.  I chose to draw a twiggy tree with four birds... Bo's at the top looking down upon my bird who is close to the kids, James' bird who is learning to fly and Leyson's bird who is still close to the nest.

My sister, Crista, who also paints for Kidspired Creations, had some leftover burlap after her wedding, so she was inspired to paint something that she had seen when surfing on the internet one day.  She wrapped a bulletin board in burlap and painted this adorable owl on it!  I looooove how it turned out!

More to come from my little heart's desires, I'm sure!

Let Freedom Ring

I have proof that hippies still exist in the 21st century, at least in China.  A few years ago, our friends, John and Katie, and their dog George (our dog Hippo's BFF), packed up a few suitcases and moved from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Guangzhou, China.  They come to the States once a year for about a month around the holiday season.  On one of their return trips, they came bearing great news:  George was going to be a big brother!

Friends came together and threw Katie a baby shower before she and John went back to 13 time zones away.  The theme of the baby shower?  TIE DYE!

How fun?!?  Guests at the shower were instructed to bring only WHITE items and the hosts of the shower provided the dye and rubber bands, and Katie provided the "how-to."  This was my first time tie dying and I had so much fun!!!  From socks, to onesies, to blankets - this baby was going to have it all in funky tie dye fashion!  What a great party idea!!!

Though we didn't yet know the gender of the baby, it really didn't matter to Katie... especially because in China people aren't as set on blue vs. pink as we are here.  No gender stigmas based on color of clothing.

Though normally doctors do not reveal the gender of babies in China, John and Katie somehow batted their eyes enough to find out they would be having a baby GIRL!  You know how excited I get about girlie things!!!  Now here's where the fun began:  John and Katie both agreed upon the name Zoë, but were at odds over her middle name.

Isn't she adorable???
Our flower child, Katie, really wanted Zoë's middle name to mean something significant like liberty, independence or... Freedom!  Zoë Freedom!  Not everyone was on board with that, especially Daddy (Hey! He chose the last name!), so they settled on Katherine (though Katie still had her heart set on Freedom).  Katie was determined to let Freedom ring one way or another!

And here begins my first international order!  Katie chose the clean and green, super cute "Orchard Park" theme for Zoë's room and she wanted a bulletin board to match.  My instructions?  It had to be a small bulletin board (small enough to fit in a suitcase and it definitely had to have the word "freedom" somewhere on there!

I absolutely love this bedding.  I love the natural look of this bedding... the colors, the trees, the birds - I love birds, but my favorite is that yellow apple - so I was really excited to match this print!  The shapes are simple and bold, so I had to make sure to match that boldness in size proportion and spacial relationship.  Because this is a professional picture that I found when Googling the bedding name, the colors and details were a lot easier to match.

The Final Product:
 The REAL Final Product:
Zoë Katherine!
Aw!  She LOVES her bulletin board!  See?

Go Team!

I live in a house divided!  I was born and raised a Louisiana State University Tiger, and my husband a University of Oklahoma Sooner.  Sure, our teams don't cross paths much (except for that amazing 2003 National Championship game when the Tigers beat the Sooners 21-14 at the New Orleans Superdome... not that I keep track), but there is a definite battle over the remote during football season.

In fact, before the boys were even born we "argued" over which team our sons would prefer.  We also "argued" over the theme for our oldest's first birthday... LSU or OU theme?  We settled with a swimming pool theme since it was a swimming party (I know... clever, right?)

If you are a sports fan, please check out my Team Sports Decor below!  Just because I only have a few teams painted, doesn't mean I can't paint your favorite team (unless you're an Alabama fan.................. just joking!!!... kind of).
